Joel Henson is entering his 17th year as an instrumental music educator and is currently President Elect of the Alabama Bandmasters Association. Henson’s concert, marching, and jazz bands have consistently earned superior ratings at performance assessments. His concert bands have been selected to perform at the Alabama Music Educators Association Conference. His marching bands have been named Bands of America Class A Champions at both the Jacksonville Regional and Atlanta Super Regional.
Prior to this appointment as President Elect, Mr. Henson served as Recording Secretary of the Alabama Bandmasters Association. Mr. Henson also served as Chairman of District IV of the Alabama Bandmasters Association. Henson’s professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, Alabama Music Educators Association, Alabama Bandmasters Association, National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu International School Bandmaster Fraternity, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity. Mr. Henson recently received National Board Teaching Certification. Henson has served as a clinician and adjudicator at events throughout the Southeastern United States.
Mr. Henson is a graduate of the University of Alabama receiving both a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters of Arts with emphasis on Instrumental Music Education. While at the university, Henson studied conducting with Dr. Kenneth Ozzello and Dr. Gerald Welker and trombone with Professor Daniel Drill.
